BERMUDA

June - July 2026

IT'S ALMOST MY BIRTHDAY!!! So, I'm going on an epic adventure to Bermuda!!!!!

I'm taking a cruise on Carnival Sunshine. Sunshine is homeported in Norfolk, so I was able to park locally and board the cruise in downtown Norfolk. The cruise port is directly adjacent to Nauticus and the battleship Wisconsin.

We will have two full days at sea before arriving in Bermuda. We are spending 3 days docked in Bermuda which will allow me to experience a bunch of places on the island. I plan on taking full advantage and see as much as possible.

Bermuda, which is an archipelago of 181 islands, is a British Overseas Territory. It sits in the North Atlantic and is 643 miles from the closest point in North America, North Carolina. Bermuda has approximately 20 square miles of land. It has approximately 63,000 residents.

Large ships dock at the Royal Naval Dockyard. (See map below) The Dockyard, which was originally built in 1811 for the British Royal Navy for ship building and repair. It contains several fortifications which guarded the Atlantic shipping lanes. The Dockyard was carved out of a large mound of limestone which was used to construct the buildings and fortifications - many of which are still in place and have been repurposed as shopping, dining, art studios, and the National Museum. As cruise ships got larger, Bermuda shifted the cruise dock from downtown Hamilton to the Dockyard.

There's a public ferry that goes between the Dockyard and Hamilton (which is the capital of Bermuda).

beachcombing is an attitude, an expressive metaphor for reality, an attraction and adventure, that ranges from the eager inquisitiveness of youth to the more philosophical approach that comes from gaining and spending, and being spent, by the fortunes of life, like the flotsam and jetsam along the shore.
