George Washington Birthplace
Nearby by to Stratford Hall in Westmoreland County is the site of George Washington's birth. The park has several Colonial Revival structures that were built in the 1930s during a period of Colonial Revival across the nation. There was no documentation of what that house looked like so the people at the time built "the house that Washington 'deserved' due to his place in history.
The house in which Washington was born was destroyed by fire in 1779 and up until recently, the Park Service thought it had found the foundation of that house and it outlined on the property. Recent archeological excavations have shown that that location was not, in fact, the location of the house and the foundation was that of an out-building. They hope that through future investigation they will be able to find it.
There is a memorial obelisk at the entrance to the site which is a one-tenth replica of the Washington Monument in D.C.
